Sunday Staples: Game Day Guacamole

I'm back with another installment of Sunday Staples! Just in case you missed it we've already covered how to make Perfectly Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. Today's post, in honor of the Super Bowl is all about how to make the perfect game-day ready guacamole! 

There are a lot of pre-made guacamole options that you can just pick up from your local grocery store these days. Some of the pre-made brands are made from good ingredients and don't test half bad. But some pre-made guacamoles include unnecessary preservatives and additives that aren't the best for you. Thankfully, there's no need to buy the pre-made stuff unless you absolutely have to! Good guac takes just a few ingredients and it's super easy to make.  

First, start with ripe avocados. This is a must. The worst thing is trying to mash up hard pieces of avocado for your guacamole. When picking out avocados give them a gentle squeeze. You want an avocado that has a little "give" and doesn't feel hard when you squeeze it. You can also flip off the little cap or stem at the top of the avocado. If it's green underneath the stem, and doesn't feel too hard, then you've got a good avocado!

Picking the avocado is probably the hardest part. Next, you just open up the avocado, scoop the inside out into a bowl and get to mashing. You can leave your guacamole pretty chunky or make it smoother depending on how you like things. Never opened an avocado before? Watch this great video!

The final step is to add all of the seasoning, spices, and herbs! I've given you some measurements below but honestly this step really comes down to personal taste. So experiment and feel free to add more or less of what you want!

  • 2 large avoacados
  • 1/2 tsp salt 
  • 1/4c chopped cilantro 
  • 1 tbsp diced red onion 
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp paprika 
  • Optional: 1/4 of a small jalapeรฑo, diced


  1. Mash the avocado to your liking and then add the remaining ingredients. Stir until well combined. Serve immediately and enjoy!
